Environmental Policy Statement
As a company Garden Xtras recognizes it’s responsibilities to the environmental well being and continuing good health of the planet. This document outlines a number of policies our company has implemented in order to reduce it carbon footprint and ensure all members of staff work in a manor that not just complies with the government’s environmental guidelines, but goes beyond them to help create a sustainable future.
Energy efficiency
Our company works from a single factory unit on the south coast of England, at this unit our practices and procedures have all been written with their environmental impact in mind. We aim to be as energy efficient as possible at all times and manufacture in batches to avoid the excessive use of machinery. Low energy light bulbs are used throughout the factory and we have a system to ensure that the lighting is turned off when not required and at the end of the day.
Recycling and minimizing waste
Garden Xtras take’s recycling very seriously, both in the office and on the factory floor. The office runs a recycling system, dividing general waste, plastics and paper. Plastics are then recycled and scrap paper is then often shredded and used as packing material, this reduces our use of oil-based products such as bubble wrap and polystyrene. We believe strongly in reusing resources whenever possible and send used electronic goods such as mobile phones to charities like Oxfam.
On the factory floor all waste manufacturing products (mainly steel) are recycled and there are no harmful or toxic waste byproducts produced in our manufacturing processes. Our products are manufactured using recycled materials when ever possible such as, steel and plastic. We provide recycling bins for aluminum cans and plastics such as plastic strapping. We encourage staff to reuse resources as much as possible and send nearly 100% of our products out in re-used cardboard boxes.
Local Suppliers
We’re proud to be a British manufacturer, giving our products a much lower carbon footprint than imported goods and preference is always given to local suppliers and subcontractors.
Transporting goods
We manufactory the vast majority of our goods at our factory unit using recycled steel, this reduces the need to ship in goods from abroad. When ever possible we distribute our goods via the royal mail and courier services to reduce the use of our own vehicles. Being located 5 minutes from a train station we encourage our staff to use the train and other forms of public transport to make their way to work and provide a travel allowance as an incentive to do so. We also provide a secure area to leave bikes.
Products
As one of the south coasts largest retailers of garden furniture we ensure all our wood based products are from sustainable sources using FCS certified timber carrying the FSC symbol where ever possible. We pride ourselves on know all of our wood comes from sustainable sources and it’s a fact that we like to pass on to our customers.
